Winter’s Bone took the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and from early on looks to be the critical darling of the year. Between this (directed by Debra Granik) and fellow Sundance hit The Kids Are All Right (dir. Lisa Cholodenko), it’s nice to see the whole “year of the woman” subplot from last year’s awards race might end up being a trend. Winter’s Bone is supposedly anchored by a phenomenal breakout performance by 19-year-old Jennifer Lawrence – who is using ALL of her talents to make sure she gets noticed. As you might imagine, I have rather mixed feelings about this strategy; I hope, at least, that Lawrence can continue to find quality parts and not be forced to exploit her looks for a career.
